Celebrating the International Year of Small Islands Developing States

This year UN celebrate the International Year of Small Islands Developing States (SIDS). It was at the 1992 Earth Summit that the international community recognized the special vulnerabilities of SIDS – small size, isolation, exposure to disasters, to external shocks and to climate change impacts.

IES Nuestra Señora de la Victoria decided to to work on this issue from 7^th to 11^th April and this is the result.

Lola Galán, Carmen García and their students from 4º B made beautiful cardboard islands with some information about islands.

Mavi Carrión and her students from 3º A made some posters about SIDS and the environment.

My 2º A students looked for information about the Pacific Islands and showed it on posters.

In 2º Bachillerato C, we watched some videos. First, this one

to learn about SIDS.

Then, an interesting documentary about Tuvalu, the sinking island.

Spring and Easter Eggs

People celebrate Easter according to their beliefs and their religious denominations. Christians commemorate Good Friday as the day that Jesus Christ died and Easter Sunday as the day that He was resurrected. Today on Easter Sunday, many children wake up to find that the Easter Bunny has left them baskets of candy. He has also hidden the eggs that they decorated earlier that week. Children hunt for the eggs all around the house. Neighborhoods and organizations hold Easter egg hunts, and the child who finds the most eggs wins a prize.

On Monday 21st April 2014, the annual White House Easter Egg Roll will be held. Since Mrs Obama arrived to the White House, the Easter Egg Roll isn’t just about fun, it’s also about the re-education of America. It takes place in President'sPark on the South Lawn of the White House, and it supports the First Lady's Let'sMove! initiative to help kids grow up healthy. This year's theme is "Hop into Healthy, Swing into Shape," and all of the activities encourage children to lead healthy and active lives. This year spring and Easter came almost at the same time so we decided to celebrate it with a special party in 1º ESO. On the one hand, we learnt about Easter Eggs traditions in USA and painted boiled eggs to give them as a gift. Besides, students were asked to bring some home made delicious cakes on the topic Spring. There were three possible winners, the most original recipe, the most delicious one and the prettiest one.  It was difficult to decide but the conclusion was clear: they all ate the awards ...
